As one of America's best kept secrets, Healthy Black Communities, Inc. continues to evolve and grow into an organization of relevance, integrity and importance. The
individuals who serve on the HBC Board of Directors
are responsible for ensuring that the organization's programs and
initiatives are in line with the mission: to provide quality
programs and services that foster healthy behavior and lifestyle
within the Black community. Currently,
Board Members agree to serve a two-year term and attend quarterly
meetings either in person or via teleconference (at their own
expense).
Every member of the Board of Directors makes the following commitments:
- Support the mission of Healthy Black Communities, Inc.;
- Actively support and participate in activities to ensure that the organization fulfills it commitment to develop programs and services that contribute to the quality of life for Black communities;
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings (have no more than two unexcused absences);
- Review all materials emailed or mailed by the CEO;
- Attend the annual Board planning session (i.e. June/July);
- Actively serve on at least one of the Center's Advisory Boards and adopt one project throughout the year;
- Make a generous annual gift from your own resources;
- Assist the CEO by implementing fundraising strategies through personal influence with others (i.e. corporations, individuals, foundations);
- When possible, arrange contributions from organizations to which you have access;
- Participate in Healthy Black Communities, Inc. annual campaign by working with the CEO to identify prospective donors, send out solicitation letters and follow up with prospects;
- Support and participate in special events;
- Serve as a community ambassador;
- Attend an annual group activity with Healthy Black Communities, Inc. ;
- Nominate new Board candidates on an as-needed basis;
- Participate in the interview process for new Board candidates; and
- Draw on community contacts and affiliations to further the cause of Healthy Black Communities, Inc., such as recruiting new volunteers, establishing new corporate partnerships and so on.
The
HBC Board of Directors meets regularly throughout the year
to provide guidance to the organization's management and give direction
for programs and initiatives developed by the organization. In addition,
strategic planning meetings are held with the key board members annually.
